Introduction

DeskoverX let's you replace your static desktop background with several useful, informative or interestingly animated backgrounds. The intention of this introduction is to give you a quick overview of what all you can do with DeskoverX. You can find more in-depth information on the specific topic-pages. You find links to the topic-pages on the left side in the Help Index and of course throughout the text as links you can follow.

DeskoverX consists of a main program and several plugins. A plugin, taken for itself, is rather simple and limited to one sole purpose. But combined, plugins bring the life into your desktop and the motion. We provide the following plugins, they all can be combined with each other in varying combinations. Some can even interact with other plugins.

You can easily design your own desktop background by simply adding these plugins to the layout and arranging them any way you want. In layoutmode you simply grab a plugin on the desktop and drag it to the position you want to have it. Resizing a plugins' area is equally simple, you just grab one of the borders or corners and pull it to expand or shrink the area the plugin covers. Now, what if the areas overlap? Well, you just decide which area you want to have in front of the other. To do that, simply drag the plugins' representations in the layout-manager to the desired depth position.

Now, let's assume you have designed you're own layout, e.g. a Picture Player that shows pictures you took of your favourite beaches around the world, a really cool screensaver in the background, a browser window that displays some information you want to remember or share about those beaches and then, just to top it all: The 3D globe, that shows where on the world your current beach from the picture player is. If you have taken the effort so far, there's one thing you should do now: Save your layout!

You can create as many different layouts as you wish and save them all on your hard disk to load them into your desktop again some other time. If you take just a little care and place the playlist of the Picture Player and other needed files in the same folder or a folder below and package all together, then you can even give the layout to your friends and family and they can enjoy the show as well.

Getting started with a new program can be awkward. Therefore DeskoverX gives you as much power over the settings as possible, but makes the handling as easy as possible at the same time. To get you started with your own layouts, we provided you with a few sample layouts, the presets. They show how even simple combinations of plugins can result in interesting layouts that will bring your screen alive.

All of these presets can be used "as they are" or you can use them as a starting point for your own personal layout.
