Using the CamLinks Editor

To add, alter or remove a CamLink from the CamLinks list, you have to use the CamLink Editor. The CamLink Editor is a standalone program. You can run it from the start menu. Click on the Start button, then choose All Programs, find the DeskoverX program group entry in the list and start the CamLink Editor.

Steps to starting the CamLink Editor

First, take a look at the left side of the CamLinks Editor. There's a list with several folders. If you click on one of those folders, subfolders and CamLink entries appear. On the right side, additional information for the selected folder is shown. In the example below, the top-level folder New Zealand is selected. On the right you can see and edit the name and geographic coordinates. These coordinates are used as makeshift for CamLinks, that don't have an own set of coordinates attached to it (means: if you couldn't find a set of coordinates for a webcam, you'll have at least a rough approximation, namely the coordinates of the country/folder you put the cam in)

If you right-click on a folder, you'll get a context menu with 4 entries.

Use each of these entries to expand the folders and CamLinks structure. For example, once you have selected the New Zealand folder, you could use Insert new folder to create subfolders like North Island and South Island, supply a set of coordinates for each of the islands and sort all the currently available CamLinks into the now suitable folder.

If you have selected a folder, you can either use the context menu's Insert new entry or the Add button to insert a new CamLink. Now you can see several groups of settings

Basic Information starts with the Name field where you can assign a name to the webcam. Below that, there are several URL fields. The Image URL must be the link to the webcam image, otherwise you won't see anything later on. The ending is always that of an image-file (.jpg, .png, .gif, .bmp). The CamPage URL should be the webpage, where the cam is usually displayed. The HomePage URL can be the same as the CamPage, but usually is some higher-level start page. The CommentPage URL is currently not used, but can, for example, point to a webpage where you can write down your own comments about the webcam or the shown picture.

Periodic Updates lets you set a refresh rate for the webcam image. This should be set to the same time interval, that the webcam is putting up new images on it's campage. It would be completely useless and a stress on the network, if you set the refresh rate to 1 second, when the actual image refresh is 15 minutes.

Coordinates sets the latitude and Longitude of the webcam. These are the coordinates that the Globe plugin later displays and puts the pin-style marker on. The altitude tells the Globe plugin, how close it should zoom in on these coordinates. In the supplied CamLinks list, this value is usually set to 7000 km. If no values for coordinates and altitude are supplied here, then the folder settings are used as a makeshift.

Authorization is only used, when you have to login to a campage with a password. Here you can provide the required username and the password and DeskoverX signs in automatically on the campage. Please note that the data you provide is not encrypted beforr storing them. This feature is not for security-relevant applications!

Folders lets you choose several folders, in which this CamLink is listed. In the example below, Joshua Tree National Park is first listed in the USA/California folder, but there is also a check on the A List of Topics/National Parks. Scroll up and down to see all the checked entries for a CamLink.
